What Will My Child Gain From Learning Taekwondo?

An instructor punches into a student's pads while the class watches at Kingsbury Taekwondo

You’ve brought your child to our taekwondo club, and they’re standing next to you looking a bit shy while you talk to the man wearing the scary black belt. You want your youngster to learn self-defence and build their confidence.

Well, you’ve definitely come to the right place, but maybe not for the reasons you might first think. Yes, we will work on self-defence and confidence-building, but in the process your child will learn some other values, such as perseverance, the usefulness of self-control and learning to work well with their peers.

A club built on respect

Kingsbury Taekwondo attracts students from all over north-west London and gives them a club in which to train with people they might not otherwise have met. We’re big on treating each other with respect and courtesy. We value working together to set goals and helping each other to reach them.

In learning a martial art you will need the motivation to turn up and go through your paces. We balance lessons between fun, exertion and learning. And again, your child might be picking up more than you think. Of course they will learn strikes, kicks and blocks along with many new ways of moving, but they will also discover resilience and how to push through when things don’t go right first time. Knowing that your techniques will be effective gives you confidence that you will be able to defend yourself. But first comes persistence.

Learning taekwondo at the right pace

We will assess your child and work out what pace they are ready to go at, and the best way to challenge them to increase their performance. We teach senior grades to treat their juniors with respect and help them to progress, not compete with them and deflate them.

Knowing how to control power and when to apply it are valuable skills to have, as is working consistently towards a goal. We’re big on focus and paying attention to detail in technique when the student is ready. Some of these skills carry across to a child’s school studies. We give children the space to break down problems and build up proficiency, and as teachers we are ready to keep supplying the basics until they achieve their objectives.

Your child will come to us wanting to know how to fend off bullies, but will learn things about facing and overcoming challenges that go beyond physical altercations.
